Indulge in your own DIY Organic Spa…. Here are the know -hows:
Thoroughly cleanse your face by removing makeup with a makeup remover. To get clean skin, it is ideal that you double cleanse using a milk cleanser or face oil. This ensures that you get rid of dirt and oil that clog pores and cause break-ups. Sensitive skin will particularly love the soothing properties of a milk cleanser.
Milk Cleanser Recipe:
This is a great cleanser for dry to normal skin. The lemon juice is a natural astringent. Mixed with the yogurt it will help restore the skin pH levels.
1/2 cup plain yogurt
1 tsp fresh lemon juice
3 drops chamomile essential oil
1 teaspoon vitamin E oil
Mix the ingredients together. Pour a small amount into your hand. Massage your face with cleanser, then rinse. Store in an air tight container in the refrigerator. It will last up to 10 days.
Once a week, it’s advisable to exfoliate your skin to slough off dead cells on the surface of yoru skin. This will reveal a newer and fresher layer of skin to give you a brighter complexion. For a homemade scrub, try honey oatmeal.
Honey-Oatmeal Scrub Recipe:
Oatmeal is highly absorptive, hypoallergenic and helps to soften skin. Oats have the best amino acids balance of all the cereal grains(amino acids work as water-binding agesnts in skin care products). Oats have also been clinically shown to help heal dry, itchy skin.
2 tablespoon of oat
1 teaspoon aloe vera juice
1 teaspoon lemon juice
a pinch of brown sugar
Mix together in a clean bowl until you have a smooth paste. Gently massage onto damp skin in circular motion and rinse off with warm water. You can triple the amount for a smoothing body scrub later.
After cleansing and exfoliating, treat your face to a rejuvenating facial steam. Put your face over a bowl of freshly-boiled water. Add a few drops of essential oil (lavendar to calm and lemon to invigorate). Cover with a face towel and steam away for 5 minutes. Steaming helps to open up pores and detoxify skin. Essential oils are easily available at retail outlets or online stores.
After steaming, blot face then apply a mask made of fresh fruit which helps to brighten dull skin. Fruits contain alpha-hydroxy acids (but does not irritate like certain AHA skincare products) to remove the surface layer of dead skin revealing a fresher looking complexion.
Rejuvenating Fruit Mask Recipe:
Clean strawberries, oranges and peach. Add a tablespoon of honey and oatmeal until it is thick. Mix well, then apply onto skin and let sit for ten minutes. You may even lie down and relax with two slices of cucumber over your eyes to de-puff eye bags. After rinsing off with water, follow with your regular skin care routine(cleanse, tone and moisture).
Reminder: use only natural and organic skin care products.
A beachside vacation of salt water and sun combine to cause frizzy hair unmanageable, instead of spending a bomb on a hair-spa treamtment, you can easily replenish moisture and nourishment into your tresses with a good homemade hair mask of avocado.
To make, blend the flesh from an avocado until you get a thick paste then apply onto hair as a mask and leave on hair for about 10-15 minutes. Alternatively, you can try doing a weekly olive oil mask to seriously help dry hair. Comb through hair covered thoroughly in olive oil and then cover with glad wrap or a shower cap. Leave for fifteen minutes before shampooing clean.
Again, as a reminder, please check the ingredient list of your shampoo and conditioner; and ensure that it does not contain DEA, Sodium Lauryl Sulfate and Propylene Glycol.
Soak Away Stress
From time to time, especially after a hard day’s work, you can soak your stress and aching muscles away with a warm bath. Run a warm bath and ensure the door and windows are closed. When the tub is sufficiently filled, add up to 10 drops of essential oil to the water, circulating it throughout. As the oil is moved, the scent will rise with the steam of the water.
The relaxing and calming infusion requires 2 drops of lavendar, 2 drops of bergamot and 2 drops of cedarwood.
For dry skin, you should indulge in a milk bath – which Cleopatra practised to maintain smooth and white skin. Pour a bowl of milk powder into your warm bath, mix with your hands, then slide in for a milky bath.
If you have been walking a lot, it pays to pamper your feet. Turn your bathroom into a spa with this ahhh-inducing soak that contains Epsom salts to relieve swelling and comfort tired, aching feet. Add that and a few drops of peppermint essential oil into your foot bath and soak away for a few minutes or until you feel your feet rejuvenated again. Peppermint will not only leave your feel feeling cool but it eliminates foot odour too.
Burn and Relax
At the same time, burn some lavender candles or other aromatherapy candles of your choice during a bath or shower to enhancec the relaxing atmosphere. Burning essential oils also help to play a part because it helps to calm your olfactory senses. For example, ylang ylang and lavender oil promtes relaxation while lemon or bergamot refreshes.
A spa session will not be complete without some relaxing tunes, so make sure you have a library of your favourite jazz or classic songs you can play to help you unwind. It’s especially great to hear the lovely music filter into the bathroom as you soak your tension away in the bath.
