How Organic is your Organic Sunscreen? (2)

This is the second part to “How Organic is your Organic Sunscreen?” entry. I am still in my quest of finding the safest and most natural and organic sunscreen.

When we talk about natural and organic products, we expect these products are made of natural ingredients that are totally natural and safe (i.e. free from harmful synthetic chemicals). However, the word “organic” is abuse brutally.

Take the reputable well-known organic company – Aubrey Organics. From its website, [tag]Aubrey Organics[/tag] claim to produce 100% natural hair, skin and body care products. They make a range of natural sunscreen (see Aubrey Sun Care special) with the tag line – “Safe natural sun protection any time you’re outside”.

If you are those who don’t read ingredient lists, then yes, Aubrey Sun Care seems to be the right product for you. On the other hand, if you are an ingredient detective, you will definitely scrutinize their ingredient list. Let’s take a look at Aubrey Organic’s Natural Sun SPF 25 Green Tea Protective Sunscreen.

Aubrey Organics Natural Sun SPF 25 Green Tea Protective Sunscreen

Here is the complete ingredient lists of the product:

Active Ingredients INCI: Padimate O (PABA Ester), Titanium Dioxide.

Inactive Ingredients INCI: Aqua, cetyl alcohol (coconut fatty alcohol), Simmondsia chinensis (jojoba) oil*, Simmondsia chinensis (jojoba butter), alcohol denat., Helianthus annuus (sunflower) oil*, Camellia japonica (camellia) oil, lecithin, glycerin, Epilobium angustifolium (willowherb) extract, Butyrospermum parkii (shea butter)*, aloe barbadensis (aloe) leaf juice*, Camellia sinensis (green tea) leaf*, glyceryl linoleate and glyceryl linolenate (vitamin F), silica, Citrus grandis (grapefruit) seed extract, tocopheryl acetate (vitamin E), Hamamelis virginiana (witch hazel) extract, ascorbic acid (vitamin C), Glycine soja (soybean) oil, Daucus carota sativa (carrot) root extract, beta-carotene, Jasminum officinale (jasmine) oil, Tanacetum annuum (Morrocan blue camomile) oil*.

Did you see that? Titanium Dioxide is evident in this product! In case you missed my entry on sunscreen, Titanium Dioxide is a photo-activator that can react with other sunscreen chemicals and promote their free radical production or their cancer forming abilities. Recent studies have shown that Titanium damages the cells’ DNA and it has been listed as a potential carcinogen.

Geez… even, [tag]Dr. Hauschka[/tag]‘s Sunscreen Lotion SPF15 also contain [tag]Titanium Dioxide[/tag]. :(

This is getting appalling. Well-known organic companies are claiming to produce natural and [tag]organic[/tag] products. This is sheer irony.

Is there any hope? My quest will continue…
