How to Spring Clean Your Beauty Regime

Today marks the first day of Spring! Before we know it, the sun will be shining, the flowers will be blooming, and hints of green will start appearing around every corner.

Spring is also the time to spring clean our bathroom cabinet by replacing every commercial beauty product with something truly pure and natural, and whenever possible, handmade. If this sounds like a massive project, well, it is because we, beauty lovers tend to collect a plethora of products.

Step One: Cleansing the Bathroom Cabinet

The very first step to going all-natural is to take a close look at your current routine. Open up your bathroom cabinets and take some time to really scrutinize the products you find there. Take a look at the ingredients lists on your most-used beauty products. If you need a chemistry degree to decipher their contents, the chances are there are a few irritants and impurities lurking in there. If in doubt, look up any unknown ingredients on the Skin Deep Cosmetics Database.

Like foods, cosmetics and skin care products have sell-by dates too. Natural beauty products tend to use fewer synthetic preservatives – so often have slighter shorter shelf-lives ranging from 12-24 months. Look for expired or rancid products and toss them.

Step Two: Use and Replace

Make a check list of products to replace, and then start working on them as the store-bought products run out. This makes the reset process less wasteful, and helps you prioritize which products to replace.

In the beauty industry, there is no labeling regulations over the terms ‘natural’ and ‘organic’. Therefore, certification logos is the key if you’re serious about the purity of your products. Always look for a Soil Association, Ecocert, ACO (Australian Certified Organic), BFA, IFoam or USDA (US Department of Agriculture) logo before you buy.

By replacing products with natural and organic products, I took a huge step toward leading a healthier happier life, and I hope you will too.

Something to Ponder…

There’s a whole world of fantastic natural make-up and personal care products out there. If you want to start small, how about thinking about the things you ingest, such as toothpaste, lip balms and lipsticks?

Are you spring cleaning up your beauty regime? If so, I’d love to hear your tips.
