Insomnia Remedies
Are you having problems sleeping throughout the night? You’re not alone, many people suffer from insomnia for many reasons including stress from your job, moving house or dealing with a crying baby. However, most people are able to return to a normal sleep pattern after time. Then there are the people who suffer from chronic insomnia. These people have difficulties sleeping on a regular basis. No matter whether it is chronic or temporary, there are things that can be done to help with insomnia.
Causes of Insomnia
A lot of people who have trouble sleeping will turn to drinking lots of caffeine-loaded drinks such as coffee, however if you drink these before bed then this will prevent you from having a good night sleep. Drinking alcohol, even though it may make you feel sleepy, actually can lead to disturbed sleep.
Leading a stressful life through work, family or health issues will also have a negative effect on sleep. If your mind is busy with worry then it’s very difficult for your body to relax.
Many people work during the night which means the only time available to sleep is during the day. Also if you live in a built-up area or near an airport then the constant noise will undoubtedly stop you sleeping properly.
Natural Ways to Help with Insomnia
If you are the sort of person who wants to avoid taking prescription medication, it’s worthwhile trying some alternative health methods. First of all try some relaxation techniques using meditation or yoga. Also add an exercise program to your daily routine as people who are active during the day tend to have a better night’s rest
Limiting your caffeine and alcohol intake will also help. If you normally have a hot drink before bed, reach for an herbal, decaffeinated tea instead. When having wine with dinner, limit yourself to half a glass.
If noise is the reason, try wearing earplugs. Blocking out the intrusive noises will help you to relax and fall into a deeper sleep.
There are also a number of herbs and herbal products that may also help with insomnia. Valerian tea is a commonly used to treat insomnia. Valerian is a natural tranquilizer.
Passion flower is another herb that is used to help with sleep problems. It is a natural sedative.
Hops, yes the ones that are used to make beer, also can be used to help with sleep. Hops can either be consumed by making it into a tea or you can sleep with a pillow containing hops. Like Passion flower and Valerian, hops is a natural sedative.
A Word of Caution
Although natural remedies can go a long way to helping with your insomnia, always check with a doctor if the situation doesn’t improve. Also be aware that many herbs and essential oils can negatively interact with any medication you may already be taking for other ailments.
